CHILD DEDICATION
Child Dedication is an opportunity for parents to dedicate their children to God publicly and to commit themselves to them God’s way. It is a moving, encouraging experience for everyone. The Child Dedication Service takes place during our regular service time on a Sunday morning, and parents are not put on the spot to say anything to the audience.
WHAT ABOUT INFANT BAPTISM?
At Journey, we wait until children are old enough to believe and understand the true meaning of baptism before we baptize them. Some churches practice a “baptism of confirmation” for children. This ceremony is intended to be a covenant between the parents and God on the behalf of the child, in which they promise to raise the child in the faith until the child is old enough to make his own personal confession of Christ. This custom began about 300 years after the Bible was completed. It is different from the baptism talked about in the Bible which was only for those old enough to believe. The purpose of baptism is to confess your personal commitment to Christ publicly.
AT WHAT AGE CAN A CHILD BE DEDICATED?
Your child can be dedicated any time after he or she is born. It’s not so much the child’s age that matters as his or her ability to understand what it means to be a follower of Christ. If your child is old enough to put his or her faith in Christ and understand the meaning of baptism, then dedication is not necessary.
